Things you should know before you travel to Puerto Escondido

Travel

Puerto Escondido or “Hidden Port,” located south of Acapulco on the Pacific Coast in the state of Oaxaca, hasn’t always been hidden. Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find it here. Things to do will be advertised along the main road and along the beaches. Almost every beach you visit will have persons promoting boat trips out to see dolphins, turtles, or whales, as well as deep-sea fishing and other experiences. It’s also close to the town centre, so you can walk to the market and other shops. It’s a terrific spot to stay in Puerto Escondido for families and all other types of travellers, yet if your primary reason for visiting is to surf, you want an abundance of eateries at your fingertips, or you want to be in the most photogenic spot possible, I’d suggest searching elsewhere.

It’s a great place to visit if you want to avoid the more upscale resorts like Cancun or if you’re on a tight budget. In reality, many of the greatest places to stay in Puerto Escondido are really affordable. A selection of villas is offered in Mexico’s surf capital, boasting an outstanding beach location. White washed walls, wooden furnishings, thatched roofs, and terraces with sea views are all part of the traditional design. On a beautiful white sand beach, there are boho-chic houses. There are also secluded bungalows that combine contemporary design with natural appeal.

Let’s take a look at some things you should know before visiting Puerto Escondido:

  • Arrive with Mexican pesos or take cash from the airport– Taking cash at the airport in Mexico is not recommended because you will be charged a high fee, especially if you have an international bank account. Even if you have a Mexican bank account, you will be charged twice as much as you would in the city centre, and cash ATMs are few in Puerto Escondido. You must travel, which is almost the same distance as travelling to the airport. The issue with ATMs in Puerto Escondido is that they are always out of cash, especially on weekends.
  • The Best Things to Do– Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find it here. Things to do will be advertised along the main road and along the beaches. There are some strong surfers at Puerto Escondido, but there are also plenty of places to rent a board and get a lesson at a reasonable fee. Almost every beach will have someone promoting a boat ride out to see dolphins, turtles, or whales, or offering to take you deep-sea fishing.
  • Obtain a motorcycle rental– In Puerto Escondido, riding a motorcycle is a breeze. However, if you are unfamiliar with Mexican driving culture, I would not advise you to do so. However, if you are sure in your ability to ride a motorcycle in Puerto Escondido, go ahead and do so!
  • Rent a vehicle– One of my favourite road trips in Mexico is to Oaxaca. Zipolite, Mazunte, and Huatulco, all within an hour’s drive of Puerto Escondido, are just a few of the nearby little towns. Even if you don’t speak Spanish, renting a car in Mexico is very simple.
  • Getting to know the layout of Puerto Escondido– Puerto Escondido is a coastal beach town in the state of Oaxaca, although it is also larger than typical Mexican beach communities. Beaches like Carrizarillo require transportation (taxi, rent a car, or ride a motorcycle), however there are plenty of beaches within walking distance. Puerto Escondido, in my opinion, is a walking town. It’ll take you about 20-30 minutes to walk from Zicatela to La Punta.

Puerto Escondido is a sanctuary for sun lovers and surfers alike, with extensive stretches of golden sand beaches and beautiful waves. This modest laid-back village with an easy feel and no huge international hotels has long drawn a mix of backpackers and surfers.
